This is probably the first card combination you will ever become familiar with and it is a very powerful one. The village gives you +1 card and +2 actions then you use your smithy card to draw an additional +3 cards and you still have 1 action left. If you get a few villages and smithies, you can easily get a big combination going and go through your entire deck.
Also play your smithy first if you more than one action so that you draw an additional three cards and can plan ahead.
