This is a really good combo when you there is a thief in play. Generally, you would go for gold with a village + smithy but if a thief is in play then your gold can be stolen. But if you get a woodcutter it is essentially a silver and gives you an extra buy. Get a bunch of villages to give you lots of actions, and a smithy to grab you woodcutters and you can quickly turn your hand into a group of silvers. And your opponents can't deal anything to steal them.
